Offshore helicopter approach procedures: reports published
Thursday, 25 November 2010 10:10
For the last few years Helios has been working together with the UK CAA and the GNSS Supervisory Authority (GSA) to improve the performance of instrument approach procedures for offshore helicopter operations.

This work has included the development of safety assessments for legacy weather radar based procedures and more recently moved onto the development, validation and flight testing of new GNSS based approach procedures - the SBAS Offshore Approach Procedure or SOAP.

The UK CAA have now published two reports on their website that were prepared with substantive input from Helios:

  • The first, CAA Paper 2009/06 summarises the safety assessment work that was undertaken on legacy offshore approach procedures.
  • The second, CAA Paper 2010/01 describes the work performed to date on the SOAP.

Our work in this area is continuing with operational flight tests of the SOAP in Aberdeen planned for December 2010. The results of these tests will be presented in the New Year.
