Impact on safety
As our article 'Effective collaboration - key to driving safety performance?' highlights, aviation is extremely safe when compared to other safety-critical industries. The skies are busier but there are fewer accidents than ever before. Flying is forecast to continue increasing in popularity (more than doubling by 2036) and new entrants such as commercial and military unmanned aerial systems, hobby drones and internet balloons (to name a few) are becoming an increasingly common sight in our skies. New entrants are already having an impact on safety with near misses between drones and aircraft tripling over a period of two years. As this figure increases, how will the aviation industry adapt and uphold its safety record in the future?
